What is fumble in football?

A fumble in football occurs when a player who is carrying the ball loses possession of it before being downed or scored. Fumbles can occur as a result of a player being tackled, the ball being dropped or stripped from the player's grasp, or a mishandled handoff or snap. In order to recover a fumble, the player must regain possession of the ball before it goes out of bounds, is recovered by the opposing team, or the play is ruled dead by the officials. Fumbles can have significant impact on the outcome of a game, as they often result in turnovers and field position changes.
